1858年にはフランス海軍の制服としても採用。

17世紀に初めて登場してから、ミリ単位にこだわって規格化。
元々は船乗りのファッションから始まり、フレンチカジュアルの象徴となった。
1917年にココ・シャネルが着用したことからシックで洗練されたアイテムとなる。
