On this day in 1971, the six Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, and Ajman came together at the historic Union House to form a federal union. Ras Al Khaimah joined three months later, thus giving birth to the modern day United Arab Emirates - a young country with an ancient history.

Today’s Doodle celebrates this historic day with a depiction of two young children in national dress, interacting with an oryx and a falcon — the national animals of the UAE.

The Arabian oryx is a type of antelope with long straight horns. Because it lives exclusively in the Arabian desert, it has developed the ability to detect rainfall. Entire herds migrate to such locations. The oryx went extinct by the 1970s, but private breeding helped re-introduce the animal into the wild a decade later.

The falcon, the other national UAE animal, also has deep roots in local culture. Falconry is a beloved sport, its origins dating back to the ancient hunting tradition of the desert nomads. Falcons are so revered, in fact, that they are the only animals allowed to travel in the main cabin of commercial aircraft in the region.

Happy national day, UAE!

Romania observes December 1st as Unification Day or Great Union Day. It was on this day in 1918 that representatives from Transylvania, Banat, Crişana, and Maramureş came together in Alba Iulia to merge with the Romanian kingdom under Ferdinand I. Military parades and cultural celebrations commemorate the occasion.

Today’s Doodle by Romanian illustrator Aitch depicts the country’s rich heritage against the backdrop of a traditional Romanian rug. In it, you can spot national emblems such as the lynx, the hip rose, and the oak. You’ll also find references to deer, mountains, and forests, symbolizing Romania's vibrant landscapes and abundant resources. The country is also famous for its traditional pottery (present on the "L"), such as the red ceramics of Horezu or the burnt clay artifacts from Marginea.

Finally, the moon is an integral aspect of Romanian folklore and ballads. In the Doodle, the sun and moon appear as well as a traditionally dressed couple reaching out for a kiss.

Happy National Day, Romania!

Unlike his domesticated brethren, the Turkey in today’s Doodle is taking flight…from the Thanksgiving table.

Three hundred ninety-six years ago, the Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest with Native Americans of the Wampanoag tribe. As time flew by, feasts like these became beloved traditions that flocked through the colonies, and in 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Though the pardoning of turkeys has been a presidential privilege since 1989, the Turkey in this Doodle has decided to pardon itself. Luckily, there are plenty of mashed potatoes to go around.

Happy Thanksgiving 2017!

Google

171004_violeta-parras-100th-birthday-google-2x.png

Today we celebrate the 55th anniversary of one of Thailand’s treasures, Khao Yai National Park. Khao Yai is the oldest national Park in Thailand, nestled in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, about 3 hours outside of Bangkok. With the help of renowned Thai conservationist, Boonsong Lekakul, the Thai government declared the park protected land on September 18, 1962. The sprawling 837 square mile park is a treasure to visitors from around the world.

Today’s slideshow Doodle will take you on a journey through the park to catch a glimpse of wildlife unique to Thailand, such as gaurs, ottors, and gibbons. Khao Yai is a sanctuary for over 70 types of mammals, including elephants, bears, and deer, as well as hundreds of species of birds. Visitors are even known to come across macaque monkeys in the winding roads as they venture into the park! Khao Yai is also home to magnificent waterfalls, hiking trails, and even white water rafting.

If you’re planning a visit to the park, you’re not alone – Khao Yai welcomes over a million visitors each year to take in nature, seek out wildlife sightings, and sleep under the stars. As a place with so many natural wonders to behold, we celebrate the 55 years of Khao Yai and hope for many more to come.

On this date in 1810, the first Junta de Gobierno (Government Junta) was formed, and the Chilean people embarked on an eight-year-long struggle for independence from Spain.

Many Chileans take advantage of the holidays and the good weather to travel and gather with friends and family. Kites fill the skies, and revelers dance the traditional cueca. Children and grown-ups alike might indulge in a sack race, fight to the top of a palo ensebado (greased pole), or even try a game of pillar el chancho, aiming to catch a very greasy pig!

Today’s Doodle, by Chilean artist Paloma Valdivia, celebrates the country’s pride in its diverse people and its bountiful natural resources. Each element of the Doodle carries a special meaning:

The Mapuche (indigenous people) and the huaso (Chilean cowboys) represent Chile's diverse people.
The mountain represents the Andes Mountain range, which stretches along Chile’s eastern borders and is home to some of the world’s tallest peaks.
The little red boat signifies the special relationship Chileans share with the sea and its resources.
The cactus represents the north of Chile, home to the driest desert in the world, the Atacama.
The penguin represents Chile’s Antarctic territory, base to several Chilean and international research stations. Remote Easter Island is home to the moai, gigantic monoliths carved by the Rapa Nui people centuries ago.
The majestic condor (among the world’s heaviest flying birds) and the bright red copihue (Chile’s national flower) symbolize the country’s rich biodiversity.
With so much to celebrate, we hope you'll join us in shouting a loud and happy ¡Feliz Dieciocho!

Tonight, if you look up at the sky, you might be able to spot two stars that originated with a pair of truly star-crossed lovers: the “Weaving Maid and the Cowherd.” Today’s Qixi Festival celebrates their origin myth.

According to the Han Dynasty-era story, an oxherd, Niulang, with the help of his ox, married a fairy, Zhinü, who became a weaver girl. When Zhinü's mother, an empress, discovered her daughter had married a mortal, she returned Zhinü to heaven. Niulang pursued Zhinü using the magic of the ox’s hide. To keep the lovers apart, the empress slashed across the sky, forming a Heavenly River of stars known as The Milky Way.

Niulang and Zhinu became the stars Altair and Vega, which come closest together on the Qixi Festival. So the tale goes, magpies were allowed to form a bridge for the lovers to meet once a year on the seventh night of the seventh lunar month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

As Zhinü was a weaver, tradition dictates you can show your loved ones you appreciate them today with handmade gifts like scarves or hats!

Happy Qixi Festival 2017!

Today we celebrate Indonesia’s Independence Day, known locally as Hari Kemerdekaan.

In the country’s capital of Jakarta and other large cities throughout the archipelago, this historically significant day is celebrated with elaborate parades including marching bands and floats festooned with Indonesia’s red-and-white flag. Flag-raising ceremonies also dominate the day, while performers sing the national anthem of Indonesia. Friends and families bond over activities like sack racing and climbing palm trees (panjat pinang) and show their culinary chops in cooking competitions featuring dishes from a myriad of cultures.

Using whimsical figures and rich colors and patterns, today’s Doodle by guest artist Aditya Pratama encapsulates the spirit of “unity in diversity” (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) the national motto of Indonesia (derived from a 14th-century Javanese poem) that defines the joy of this landmark day.
